Life in the Night Shift

I have been working the graveyard shift for as long as I can remember.  I admit, it's not easy but working at night have some perks too.

No Traffic.  You report for work just when everyone is home.  Less vehicle on the streets means less traffic and the faster you reach your destination.

No Traffic Enforcers.  I take the public transportation when I go to work.  During the day, buses and jeepneys are not allowed to unload in the corner of Buendia and Ayala.  But at night, I can get off there and walk a few steps to the office.  Hassle free!

Extra Pay.  Working at night meaning getting paid a night differential or a night shift allowance.  More money for shopping!

Quality time for the Kids.  Who says you can't spend time with your kids when you work at night?  When my daughter was younger then, I get home just in time for her to prepare for her kindergarten class.  I still had enough time to give her a bath, fix her stuff and see her off to school.  When she was older, she gets home just in time for me to wake up and prepare for work.  We eat dinner together and I still get the time to check her assignment before I leave for work.

Time for School Programs.  If I had been working in the morning shift then, I wouldn't be able to watch my daughter sing in the school program or attend a few meetings in school.  But since I work at nights, I can very well go directly to her school and attend a few school activities.  All I need is just a Caramel Frappuccino to keep me awake.

  1. I can relate. I work at night on some months. :) But it's tiring. And I miss going home when the sun is just setting.

  2. Good for you that you are able to balance your kid-rearing and working life. I don't I'd survive in a night shift job unless I work at home as I'm prone to disorders with sleep.

  4. I don't think that I could work the night shift for very long. Being sleep deprived at night would make me very irritable. I do much better going to sleep early and getting up early to work. That's what I do now since the weather has gotten so hot.

  5. I can relate. I'm not sure if you could call it work, but I help at our store at night. It was my auntie's shift originally, but her health wasn't as good as when she was at her 20s, so I decided to help her. So yeah, I rarely see the sun anymore. haha. If it weren't for my daughter who I bring to school every 7am, I'd never see sun.

  6. I experienced night shift also but that's very long ago. You are right with all that advantages but being on a night shift affects my health because I can't sleep throughout the day. Maybe you are used to the schedule already.

  7. You had good points here. I also work on shifts and sa tagal na siguro nasanay na din ako. My body gets use to it. I could get a good sound sleep naman daytime and I can do a lot of things din naman before matulog at bago pumasok.

  8. We also experience goign on a night shift duty in our work before (about 10 years ago). I often slept during duty. hehehe. But that happened at dawn where we ahve already finished our tasks and just waiting for our colleagues. Good that they did not see me sleeping. hehehe

  9. I used to work graveyard shift too but I was out cold as soon as I step out of the office. You must have a high tolerance for less sleep if you can still attend school functions! XD

  10. Wow! It's really nice you shared this to us.. I am planning to apply for a call center position which means there is a greater possibility that I'll be working on a graveyard shift.. I 've been hesitant because of the schedule.. but because of this post I am glad that it has its advantages,. :)
