One Proud Momma

My daughter has been competing in the MTAP Math Challenge since she was in first grade.  MTAP (Math Teachers Association of the Philippines), together with the Department of Education and Metrobank Foundation holds a yearly Math challenge open to elementary and high school students.  It aims to not just improve the Mathematical skills of Filipinos but to also inculcate important Math concepts.   The first time I heard about it, I didn’t really quite know what to expect until I saw her review papers in grade 1.  I thought, “How can I teach my first grader how to add/subtract fractions?” Or the area and perimeter?

I am not much of a Math pro either but I found myself during my lunch breaks, solving all the problems and thinking of ways to explain the concepts to her in the simplest way possible.  We bought white board and markers and a couple of Math books.  I surfed the web endlessly for tips and tricks.  It's not easy.  It's like going through primary and secondary education again.  But everything paid off.  I've watched her struggle at first and now computation just seem so easy for her.  There are even days when she would challenge me until my poor brain can take it no more.

The team  - Marjana, Alyssa and Fisher with coach Mr. Bernardo

Last February 9 was the division level team competition and their team breezed through it.  They ended up in first place.   They represented the Division of Makati in the (Public) Sectoral Competition last Saturday, February 16.  Among all the public schools in NCR, their team came in 2nd.  And this coming Saturday, they will compete against the winners of the Private Sectors in NCR.  Regardless of what the outcome is, she is and will forever be our Math Champ.

Oh yeah! I am one proud Momma!
