Going Bananas Over Bananas

Long before the minions became famous on chasing over bananas, I got my own minions at home who just couldn't get enough of it.  My husband or my yaya used to buy a bunch of bananas in the morning and by the time I wake up at around 8pm to prepare for my night shift job, the bananas are gone.  This is not an exaggeration.  Leave it on the table and before you know it, it's gone.

Bananas are quite common in the Philippines.  Here are 7 cool facts about it.

A bunch of bananas is called a HAND and each banana is called a finger. Come to think of it, a bunch of it really does look like a hand.

Bananas are classified as tree-like perennial herbs - not fruits.

A banana contains 467 mg of potassium which manages a person's blood pressure, ensuring that the heart is functioning properly.

Bananas are easily digested and so they are the perfect food for babies who are just starting to eat solids.  You can mash it or you can put one banana in a blender or food processor.  Then add a small portion of your breast milk or water and it's ready to serve.

Bananas help with digestion.  They can alleviate heartburn by suppressing the acid found in the digestive tract.  It contains a soluble fiber called pectin that aids in the elimination process and preventing constipation.

Bananas are great source of energy.  It contains three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber.

It is has vitamin B6, beneficial for anemia treatment and vitamin C that can help your body develop resistance against diseases.  Fresh bananas have adequate levels of minerals like magnesium (bone strengthening) and copper (production of red blood cells).

If I think about the minions and the fact that they do eat bananas, then that certainly explains their high energy and enthusiasm in working with Gru and playing with Margo, Edith and Agnes (my favorite).  That probably explains why my son is running around like there's no tomorrow too. Quite interesting.
