Going Bananas Over Bananas

Long before the minions became famous on chasing over bananas, I got my own minions at home who just couldn't get enough of it.  My husband or my yaya used to buy a bunch of bananas in the morning and by the time I wake up at around 8pm to prepare for my night shift job, the bananas are gone.  This is not an exaggeration.  Leave it on the table and before you know it, it's gone.

Bananas are quite common in the Philippines.  Here are 7 cool facts about it.

A bunch of bananas is called a HAND and each banana is called a finger. Come to think of it, a bunch of it really does look like a hand.

Bananas are classified as tree-like perennial herbs - not fruits.

A banana contains 467 mg of potassium which manages a person's blood pressure, ensuring that the heart is functioning properly.

Bananas are easily digested and so they are the perfect food for babies who are just starting to eat solids.  You can mash it or you can put one banana in a blender or food processor.  Then add a small portion of your breast milk or water and it's ready to serve.

Bananas help with digestion.  They can alleviate heartburn by suppressing the acid found in the digestive tract.  It contains a soluble fiber called pectin that aids in the elimination process and preventing constipation.

Bananas are great source of energy.  It contains three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose - combined with fiber.

It is has vitamin B6, beneficial for anemia treatment and vitamin C that can help your body develop resistance against diseases.  Fresh bananas have adequate levels of minerals like magnesium (bone strengthening) and copper (production of red blood cells).

If I think about the minions and the fact that they do eat bananas, then that certainly explains their high energy and enthusiasm in working with Gru and playing with Margo, Edith and Agnes (my favorite).  That probably explains why my son is running around like there's no tomorrow too. Quite interesting.

Music Adventure with Maddie and Matt

From the makers of EnviroPop comes the fourth edition of the Maddie and Matt series of educational application -- Maddie and Matt's Music Mania.   The latest installation was set to offer loads of entertainment and kid friendly lessons that would unleash your creative side.

Maddie and Matt's Music Mania is a free iOS application that intends to provide basic information about musical instruments - their names, parts, functions and even a brief history is featured in the application.  It also has the following features:

  • A Board of Musical Instruments - consists of 8 free and 13 paid musical instruments ranging from wind, percussion, brass, string, up to electronic.
  • History - shows the instrument's brief background including its origin, type, genre and specific functions
  • Parts - breaks down the various components that makes a certain instrument work.
  • Popular Artists - names the notable personalities all over the globe who became known for playing a particular musical instrument.
  • "Try this instrument" - giving the user a chance to play the instrument in a digital manner
  • Quiz - displays a number of questions that will test the user's knowledge and comprehension skills
  • Social - allows you to share the instruments you learn in Facebook.

Maddie and Matt's Music Mania is both educational and entertaining.  Exactly what I am looking for in an application.  I love that it teaches kids about music and I love that the application gets kids to be interested in learning and playing the instruments for real.  As for me, it kind of made me think about rekindling my relationship with my old guitar.

Visit the iTunes App Store to download Maddie and Matt's Music Mania for free.  Or you can visit their website for more information.

Fighting Common Illnesses + Champs Chewable Vitamins Giveaway

This is it! The rainy season is finally here.  Sure I love the rain.  I've got fond memories of playing and dancing under the rain but I recently found myself praying that the sun will at least shine long enough for my son's cloth diapers and my daughter's uniform to dry.  But that's not all.  Rainy season brings about illnesses and diseases.  Some of the common ones are

cough
flu
colds
diarrhea
typhoid
skin irritation
dengue
leptospirosis

The good news is we can do something about it.  We can prevent ourselves and our kids from being infected by living a healthy lifestyle.  Here are a few tips:

STAY CLEAN.  Most diseases are caused by germs and bacteria.  Cleaning the environment will mean eliminating germs around you.  Take a bath everyday.  Wash your hands before and after coming into contact with dirty objects.  This is really simple but oftentimes gets neglected.

DON'T SOAK IN FLOOD WATERS.  Leptospirosis and skin irritation are just two of the diseases you'll get if you happen to soak in flood water.  For those living in areas where it's often flooded, make sure that you clean your feed and legs right after.

LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.  Improve your immune system by eating the right kind of food, exercising and taking vitamin supplements.  Some kids don't like drinking medicines but that's no longer a problem nowadays because there are companies who got creative with kid's vitamins like Champs Chewable Vitamins.  They come in different shapes, fun colors and flavor that your kids can enjoy.

Time for a Giveaway!

Thank you to the generous people of CCM International Philippines, I'm giving away one sample pack for one lucky Planet Mom reader.  This is open to Philippine residents only.  To join, just follow the instructions below:

A pack contains one bottle of each Champs Chewable Vitamins variant and a tumbler.

a Rafflecopter giveaway Good luck everyone!

LJS Bodega Sale Now in Bacolod

The first time I went to the LJS Bodega Sale in 2011, my husband and I went crazy.  It was heaven for those who love to cook (like my husband) and bake.  In 2012, I was a little disappointed when we weren't able to come because of a conflict in schedule.  Not only that, we know that we'll be moving back here in Bacolod the next year.  But lo and behold!  The LJS Bodega Sale is actually HERE - in BACOLOD!

It was just one of those days when we head off to the nearest department store - Lopue's East - and we saw a sign.  Pots and pans and baking utensils greeted us when we entered the store.  Immediately I felt giddy when I saw an all too familiar color guide.

One can get up to 70% discount from selected items
Avent Mealtime set down to Php 1200
Discounted baking pans for those who love to bake
A non stick pan for Php 250 and a 26cm Chef's classic pan for Php 480.  Definitely a STEAL!

It was just like the Bodega Sale in Manila.  What's even better is that the Bodega Sale will last the entire month of July.  Oh yeah! More time for me to earn online so I can buy what I want.  You bet I have my list ready.

Come visit Lopue's East Centre from July 1-31, 2013 and check out the amazing amazing deals on Avent, Chef's Classic and Goody Products.

Mommy Discovery: Champs Chewable Vitamins

A month ago, Glaiza of Moomy Musings posted an invite for a launch of a new vitamins for kids and I thought, I would have accepted it in a heartbeat if I was in Manila.  Attending events and spending time with my mommy friends is one of the things that I missed when I moved back here in Bacolod.  Not only do I get to bond with them but the information I get and the things I learn from those events are immeasurable.

I may have missed the event but the awesome people from CCM Philippines sent over some samples for my kids.  Big Thanks to Mylene and Christine.

Champs Chewable Vitamins is one of CCM's flagship brands.  It is a line of vitamin preparation for kids in fun chewable tablet forms.  Let's face it.  Getting the kids to eat right and getting them to drink vitamin supplements to strengthen their immune system is an ongoing challenge of every moms.  We have to go through the coaxing and the bribing just to get them to do it.  It can get pretty exhausting sometimes. Work at Home with ODESK

My husband and I have taken the leap last March.  I resigned from my old job as a Quality Manager and moved back to my province in Bacolod.  I thought about going back to the BPO industry but when I found out I went into relapse, I immediately said no.  I could no longer afford to compromise my health.  We went on and look for opportunities that will allow me to work at home.

Why work at home?

  • I need the flexibility.  I want to work at my own pace and time preferably in the morning shift.
  • I want to be able to spend more time with the kids.
  • I have been through a huge amount of stress for the past years that I thought it's time for me to be a little laid back.

First thing that came into my mind - ODESK.
Odesk is a community.  I call it a community because it is where people go online to find work or to look for employees.  Kind of like virtual community.  Your or your client could be located anywhere in the world yet you provide your services and get paid for the amount of work that you do.

Getting Started
It's as simple as going to their website and creating your profile.  It's going to be somewhat like your resume at Odesk.  It is what the employers will see when they view it.

Odesk profile
After creating your profile, there are tests that you need to complete and pass so you will be labeled as "Odesk ready." The ones I took are related to the jobs/projects that I want to get like Basic English tests or Spelling tests and MS Word.  Your scores could show your proficiency in that field.

Now you're ready to apply.  There are a lot and I mean A LOT of open jobs at Odesk.  You wouldn't know where to start.   The good thing about it is that all these jobs are categorized so you can filter the ones that you feel you are comfortable getting.  After "job hunting" for almost a month, I manage to land a few projects and one great employer (also a WAHM) that pays me by the hour.  I'm not earning that much (yet) but I'm getting there.

Odesk is one great opportunity for moms who have a lot of free time and would like to work at home. Anyone who wants to earn additional income could definitely go to Odesk.  As for me, I'm still learning the ropes.

DIY Hygienic Kit

Call me OC but really, what I want is for my daughter to  have everything she needs at school.  So I put together a kikay/hygienic kit for her to bring at school.  Here's a peek of what's inside:

It's quite simple.  All you need is a small pouch/bag and then stuff in what your kids might need at school. Hers was a small bag given to her by her ninang who used to work as a Flight Attendant at Qatar Airways.  I love that this fit really well into the front pocket of her backpack.

  • toothbrush and toothpaste - she's at school the whole day and she needs to brush her teeth after lunch
  • foldable hairbrush - this came with the pouch
  • cologne - which I put inside a really small spritzer that costs P12
  • hand sanitizer
  • tissue paper
  • small bottle of lotion
Now she's all set and I'm no longer anxious.  Did I miss anything?
